Hearts and diapers
Some milestones:
• Oscar has been sleeping in his own room, in his own bed, for two weeks (took us three years to get it renovated and ready for him). At some point in the morning he always wakes up and comes to the family bed, but he gamely goes to sleep in his own. One of us still has to lie down with him until he falls asleep, though.
• Somewhere in the past couple of months he abruptly began dressing himself in the morning, often unprompted, and now brushes his teeth with a little prompting. He still wears an overnight sleep diaper (sadly, he forgot to change it for undies one morning recently and was teased by kids at school when they noticed). There was a week or so over the summer when he was waking up to pee, but then a parent went on a trip or something and it was regression time.
• This morning, for the first time, he objected to wearing his pink sweatshirt with the hearts on it because it wasn’t a boy shirt and boys would make fun of him for wearing a not-boy shirt. Sigh. At last, societal gender anxiety catches up with us. Seems remarkable we got this far, really.
