Week seven

Here's lookin' ah-choo!

Oscar seems so much more a little person with each passing day. Not infrequently now, he locks eyes on us and coos -- seemingly conversationally. He has his moody days and his sunny ones. He goes through periods of constant, ravenous hunger (presumably ones of physical growth) and sleepy phases (ditto for brain development, we reckon).

On Friday, he hung out with Grandpa Jack at a book fair, down at the Armory, where he dozed contentedly amidst the dead trees. Books must be in his genes. He's getting it from all sides.

On Saturday, we took him to a baby carrier workshop. Yes, there's now such a dizzying array of devices for personal baby haulage -- slings, wraps, backpacks, etc. -- that there's a class in Manhattan devoted to them (well, Okay, what isn't there a class for somewhere in Manhattan?), in which a master mommy explains how they all work and you can try 'em on. We were struck by Oscar's hearty size by comparison to some of the other newborns there. For once, he wasn't the smallest in the room, and he looked perfectly healthy beside the 6-month-olds.

Sunday, we had dinner with his godfather, Patrick, and he put on a most impressive show of dazzling smiles and playful squeals -- phenomena which, though still rare and fleeting, are happily becoming more commonplace.
